Carel works in the company law department of our firm. He has over 30 years of experience as a marine and finance lawyer. His areas of expertise are ship finance, maritime law and commercial law. Carel is a renowned expert in forced sales and bunkers.
From the very first day as a lawyer Carel has practiced maritime law, and continues to do so until now: the international nature of the industry, the law and the clients has a special attraction for Carel. The fact that he speaks Dutch, English, French and German obviously helps.
During the financial crisis in the eighties, Carel has gained considerable experience in forced sales of ships. In the boom in the first decennium of 2000 financing ships was added, and in the following crisis of the past 10 years again forced sales became one of his prime activities. In most cases banks are his clients.
Another niche in his practice is the bunker trade. Given the hard times in shipping and the fact that bunkers are usually sold on credit, involving large amounts of money, there is a lot to do in this industry. Carel has been a regular speaker on bunker seminars.
Carel has been honorary consul of France for 25 years. He is very active in society through a large number of board memberships of foundations and associations. Carel is married and has five sons.
