Gerdien is a lawyer-partner in Employment Law and until recently associate professor of special employment relations with a focus on seafarers at the Erasmus School of Law (ESL). She has in-depth knowledge of and experience in special labour relations.

She is also a specialist in the co-determination law of work councils and client councils in healthcare - a subject on which she obtained her doctorate in 2005. She is well versed in collective bargaining law and employment law in a broad sense. Gerdien's clients are employers, including employers active in offshore, cross-border transport and shipping. Gerdien also advises clients with self-employed workers and temporary employment agencies, and she is the point of contact for many employers' organisations.

Her strong analytical skills enable her to translate complex employment cases/issues into a clear advice. Gerdien regularly takes successful action against fines imposed by the Inspectorate SZW.

Gerdien lectures and publishes widely on her areas of expertise. She is the (co)author and (co-)editor of several academic employment law works (including the handbooks Employment Law Topics and Special Labour Relations). Gerdien lectures at the university and gives (in-house) courses to HR staff, crewing managers and lawyers. She gives webinars and speaks at seminars, (office) events and meetings of the VRAA and the VvA, among others.
