Privacy and cybercrime
It is impossible to imagine social and economic life without privacy and the protection of personal data.
All organisations in the private and public sectors process personal data. ‘Processing’ does not only include the registration of personal data, but also any conceivable action that can be carried out with personal data; for instance, compiling, changing, consulting, retrieving, distributing and deleting data on natural persons. The Dutch Personal Data Protection Act demands very strict requirements as to the processing of personal data but also to the protection thereof. Organisations that do not comply with these provisions run the risk of being fined by the Netherlands Authority for Personal Data. As of 25 May 2018, the European General Data Protection Regulation will be effective. This Regulation will replace the Dutch Personal Data Protection Act and demands additional and even stricter requirements from organisations processing personal data. The right to privacy and protection of personal data will become increasingly important in the next few years.
